Week4 reading response

Through background readings, I learned that images have multiple meanings. Compared with the previous single appreciation of images, we need to observe the textual information that complements the image, so as to form a complete understanding of the meaning of the image. As Barthes(1999)said, the text is repressive to images. In the specific analysis of the image, the symbols of the image are various, and the meaning of the image can be more accurately defined through the text description. The author used the example of advertisement to explain this case that the image and the text can be regarded as a complete image advertisement. Otherwise, the audience will not be able to understand what the image is advertised clearly. In this situation, the image is also shifting closer to society. The author used a visual analysis method to explain how advertisements show products through colors, words, and other elements

I am also impressed by another point of view. Barthes(1977)believes that image is not fact, but perfect analogy. I think this is similar to his view expressed in he another book. The lens changes “me” and “I” seem to be a deliberate image, which is deceiving. In terms of images and texts, his views made me pay more attention to the coordination of images and texts. In the images, different meanings can be expressed through different photography techniques. I took relevant courses in college like Photography skills, which allowed me to think about the relevant meaning in photography. The different poses and different forms of the characters in the pictures are rich in multiple meanings. The analysis of the pictures requires in-depth and careful attention to their rhetorical meanings.

In the section of Camera Lucida: reflections on photography, Bart (1981) use the method of visual analysis through many photos and shares the symbology from his perspective. On one hand, In the book, Bart (1981) observes very detailed parts of many photographies, and analyzes important information through these details. On the other hand, during my reading, I probably know the two theories he proposed. He defines the terms studium and punctum. Studium is a formed opinion, which may be a collection of photos, used to explore life. Punctum is more about individuals and is a kind of detail. Bart (1981) tries to use punctum to find the inner meaning of the photo, which contains more profound meaning.
